Rivers, Trails, and Ales Festival!!

A time to enjoy the outdoors

Over the weekend (starting early on Thursday), a festival happened in Marietta, Ohio. Rivers, Trails, and Ales Festival ran from August 6-9 with plenty of activities. There was an Adventure Paddle, Paddlers Dice Run, River Raft Race, Mountain Biking, Road Biking, Trail Running and Hiking, Music, Beer and Wine tastings, and a few other activities as well. If you click the link above you can see the full schedule and all the activities that took place. It was definitely a time to get out and enjoy the outdoors with others that share the same interests.

I, unfortunately, was not able to do a lot of the activities. I was able to do the 9 am hike Saturday. I went with my mother-in-law and met up with the hiking group at the Broughton’s Nature and Wildlife Education Area. I had lived in the Marietta area for about two years before I moved where I live now and had never heard of these trails. It was a nice area and I look forward to checking out the other trails.

We took the park entrance from Ohio Route 60 which went up a steep and kind of narrow road. It led up to a few houses and, of course, the parking entrance. We took a combination of trails. We started with the red trail, veered off onto the orange trail, hit the blue trail and headed back to the red trail. We went past a nice little pond that even had a little bench to sit and rest or just nature watch. The trails had a few hills a couple pretty steep. The rains had eroded a couple of the hills down the middle of the trails but they were still passable.

After the hike, I remembered two things. One, I forgot how much I love to hike. I used to live on a farm and we had acres of field and woods. I used to hike up in the woods through the hills all the time. I decided next year, I am taking at least two weekends (probably just a day out of each weekend) a month to go hiking. Hopefully I can drag my family along. I think my two kids would love it but not so sure about my husband.

The second thing I remembered is I am not in the shape I used to be. Even though I felt great after the hike and was ready to take on the day, after the first hill I was definitely winded. Good news hiking will help and I am starting to actually set up an exercise plan.

I wish I would have taken some pictures but I didn’t want to risk my phone on the trails. Especially since I didn’t have anything to carry it in besides my pockets.

As I said, I was not able to do much this year. Everything just kind of came up that interfered with this weekend. If anyone is ever in the area during this time next year, I highly recommend joining in. There are several lodging options which include hotels as well as camping. Who knows, maybe I will see you there!

I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a blissful day!!
